en 45 minutos. Otra mangera lo hace en
sólo 20 minutos.
Si las dos mangeras se usan juntos a la vez,
¿cuántos minutos tardarán las dos para llenar
el mismo tanque?

2. El actual Congreso está compuesto por 230
diputados. Todos son ciudadanos naturales
del país (natural-born citizens).
Si la Constitucion es enmiendada de tal manera
que escaños adicionales son creados a fin de acomodar
ciudadanos naturalizados como representantes del
pueblo,
¿cuántos escaños más debe ser creados si su numero
ha de corresponder al 20% del membresía total, o sea,
cuidadanos naturales + ciudadanos naturalizados?

But I'm afraid, sir, you'll have to do more than
just give us your answer. We certainly want to
know in more detail how you arrived at your figures,
and we would much prefer that it be done simply,
without resorting to those convoluted algebraic
equations.

Per your suggestion, this is how I arrived at my figures--
For the first problem.
  • The first hose fills a tank in 45 minutes. Therefore, in 60
minutes, it fills 1.333 tanks.
  • The second hose fills a tank in 20 minutes, so, in 60 minutes,
it fills 3 tanks.
So, in 60 minutes, the two hoses together fill a total of 4.333
tanks. Now, we simply use this number to divide 60 minutes to
obtain the exact number of minutes it will take the two hoses to
fill one tank. Like this: 60/4.333 = 13.847 minutes or 13 minutes
51 seconds.
For the second problem:
  • 20% of the total number of seats belongs to the naturalized.
  • 80% of total seats belongs to the natural-born which now
number 230 delegates.
So, 80% of total seats is 230 delegates. Now, 230 divided by
80% or .8 is 287.5. (total seats). 20% of 287.5 is 57.5 (new
seats). Since there is no such thing as one half congressional
seat, we count it as 1 seat. Therefore additional seats are
58 for the naturalized + 230 for the natural-born is a total
of 288 seats.
As you can see, Señor EXLMARK, the preceeding procedure is
very lenghty and tedious. So, in the interest of those who may
want to know a shorter method, may I offer these formulas?--
1. For the hoses: (1/45 + 1/20)X = 1
a) (0.0222 + 0.05)X = 1
b) (0.0722)X = 1
c) X = 1/0.0722
d) X = 13.85 minutes or 13 mins., 51 secs.
2. For the congressional seats: (80%)X = 230;
a) .8X = 230
b) X = 230/.8
c) X = 287.5 or 288 total congressional seats.
