Is someone able to tell me the difference between castillano and spanish.
Im looking at sites and text books and dictionaries and they all call themselves spanish. I thought that castillano was the more widely spoken dialect - does this mean that they are all in fact castillano? there is a distinct difference isnt there between some of the vocab etc between spanish and castillano.
how can i tell what is what?!?!?

please help! :-)

muchos gracias!
Hi Rhawnt,

when a person is learning Spanish what he is learning especifically is Castillian, the language originated in a Spanish region, Castilla, spoken all over Spain by every Spaniard, and spoken in a lot of American countries with their specific variants, but, in Spain there are other languages like catalán, gallego, and others, spoken in some regions but not by every Spaniard.

In short, what is commonly called 'español' is 'castellano' ( in oppossition to catalan or gallego or euskera or asturiano...)

I hope it is clear ? If not, tell me and I'll explain more Emotion: smile
thanks elena - that is very interesting!
i did a spanish course a while ago and they said castillan was the more widely spoken and that 'spanish' and other dialects were less spoken. thanks for clearing it up for me. so i am safe learning from most website that would be aimed at non spanish speakers? and spanish books that would be from a foreign bookshop over here (australia)?

thanks for the help.
Basic Spanish or written Spanish(used in books) is called castellian, but every region of Spain has its own dialect, even Spanish of Latin America is also differ from country to country

I would like to learn Spanish for countries like Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, Mexico. I am told to get the Castillian Spanish as opposed to the Latin American. Why?
