Is the letter "v" pronounced as a "b" in spanish?

In my spanish classes back here in the UK i am finding it hard to recognise some words because they are pronounced with a "b" instead of a "v".
i.e. instead of saying vivo en Inglaterra , it would sound like bibo en ... ...
