I don't have any specific translation requests, but I really desire to learn Spanish, this seems like a GREAT community to start my endeavor but I'm looking for some, perhaps, free online lessons to start off with... Can anyone point me in the right direction? ~$500 (the price of Rosetta Stone) seems a little steep for a language that is so common.

I don't know of a good start point because I've never tried a spanish course (obviously) as far as I know there are many ways and courses and nobody seems to have the right one for each one. Having said that you will encounter a lot of resources if you google, for ex. this seems pretty basic and not so boring mansionspanish.com

Free FSI course -> http://fsi-language-courses.com/Spanish.aspx

But if you really want to become fluent, you should switch to native materials as soon as possible.
You are right, Rosetta Stone can be pretty expensive. There are some pretty good resources for free spanish lessons, but I believe that if you really want to learn spanish correctly and fast you need to jump in with both feet.

www.SpanishSimple.com has some reviews on courses. It seems like Rocket Spanish is a popular course and about a fifth of the cost of Rosetta Stone. Don't get too caught up in the free resources, because some will only confuse you. You need to get one way to learn Spanish and stick with it.

After you get a course and learn the basics, you should really try to speak as much as possible and listen to Spanish as much as possible. When I learned Spanish I read a book in Spanish and I watched as many TV shows as I could to adjust my ear to the things I was learning.

The best site I've found for learning Spanish is  Online Spanish Help.  It has lots of games and other activities. It's definitely the most interactive site on the Internet for learning Spanish.

If you really want to learn Spanish you could travel to a Spanish speaking country such as Colombia. This could sound a little risky to foreigners but if you contact a serious travel agent you can receive a good guide to come to this country and have an exciting experience of both learning the language and culture involvement.
Colombia especially would be a good place to learn Spanish because the accent is very neutral there. If you learn Spanish there, you'll pretty much be able to understand any Spanish speaker from anywhere. Just don't wear army-surplus gear out in the jungle. ;-)
