les and los are forms of the third person/plural personal pronoun ellos/ellas

The difference between them is grammatical, les acts as indirect object and los as direct object.

Correct. This time you are using the form of respect to address  the second person that coincides with the form of the third person plural. Or you are using the Spanish American form ustedes for vosotros.

Se puede usar "los" en esta oración? Hago esta pregunta porque en francés se usa el pronombre directo: "Je les (= español:  los) invite à une fête"

Yes you can. In fact, I think if you say, "Los invito a una fiesta," sounds better than, "les invito a una fiesta."
