I just bought a CD for my students to use this Fall. Each song teaches so much of the grammar I teach in Spanish Level One.
There is one line of grammar in one of the songs I don't understand. It uses gustar this way:
Pero no me gustas tú........But I don't like you.
I would have written: Pero ti no me gusta.
I've checked all of my review books and texts at every level and couldn't find an answer....so thank you all very much for you time, I look forward to your responces.
I should have written: Pero te no me gusta.
Thanks again for any help;) (I hope I'm correct!)

Syl:it should be:
pero no me gustas tú
pero tú no me gustas
tú is not necessary unless you emphasize that it's YOU who I don't like.
the other ones you wrote do not make sense.
me refers to the person who does or does not like something
I like = me gusta/gustas/gustan
you like = te gusta/gustas/ gustan
the verb gustar has to be inflected according to what the person does or does not like. is it you?( = gustas) him or something/it?(gusta) plural?(gustan) etc....
Everything that I have in my books, including my 501 Verb book doesn't have the verb gustar conjugated like the regular verbs. So, I have only seen gusta and gustan used in the presente de indicativo. Now the sentence makes sense with me gustas.
Now I have some other questions....How do these sentences translate??:
Te gusta = you like (it) (la manzana)
Te gustas = you like yourself???
Te gustan = you like them(las manzanas)
Can you also write: Me gusto = ?
Nos gustamos = ?
Thanks.....you have helped me before but under a different username, Nonna Barbie/Barbara....muchas gracias:)
Syl:I like you = me gustas
you like me = te gusto
I like myself = me gusto. ( yes...although it sounds a bit stupid to say so hehehe)
you like yourself = te gustas.... ( but once again, you won't really need this cuz you rarely walk around saying that you like yourself )
they like eachother = se gustan
we like eachother = Nos gustamos... hmmm, I guess it's possible to say so. but if you talk about that two persons like and care about eachother the verb querer sounds better to me: nos queremos, se quieren ....etc.
Take a look at the verb gustar en VERBIX .
Here are some additional tips for easier comprehension of the verb “GUSTAR”:
If you say: “(Yo) te amo”, it means:“I love you”… but
if you say: “(Yo) te gusto”, it DOESN”T mean “I Ilike YOU”, it means the other way around; it means:
“YOU like ME”.
Confused? Bueno, let me explain further: GUSTAR has two essential meanings, namely:
a) To like or enjoy something or doing something
e.g.:• Las mujeres gustan de chismes = Women like or enjoy gossips.
• (Yo) gusto hacer politica = I like playing politics.
b) To please someone, or to be pleasing to someone.
e.g.:• Me gustan las frutas verdes = green fruits please me, or green fruits are pleasing to me. (meaning: I like green fruits)
— Here, the subject of the sentence is “frutas verdes”, the verb is “gustan” and the direct/indirect object is “me”.
• (Yo) te gusto = I please you, or I’m pleasing to you. (meaning: you like me).
— Here, the subject is YO, the verb is GUSTO, and the direct/indirect object is TE.
• (Tú) no me gustas = You don’t please me, or you’re not pleasing to me. (meaning: I don’t like you).
— Here, the subject is TÚ, the verb is GUSTAS, the direct/indirect object is ME.
• (Yo) no te gusto = I don’t please you, or I’m not pleasing to you. (meaning: You don’t like me).
— Here, the subject is YO, the verb is GUSTO and the direct/indirect object is TE.
Espero que esto baste para aclarar más el tema.[H]M
