Hi all,

This is my first time on this site and just wanted to say hello ( or should that be Hola!)  I'm very keen to learn Spanish but realize it will take some time. One of the problems I have encountered is the pronunciation of the letter 'V'  could anyone help clarify this for me. My wifes uncle has bought a house in Otiva, so is that oh-tee-ba, or oh-tee-va, also, the letter 'c' I thought before an 'e' it sounded like 'ch' but, after hearing Spanish people say cerveza, it sounds like an 's' to me.

Thank you in advance, and I hope to be speaking to you soon,

Welcome to the forum, django!

Good question you've asked!

Yes, either "b" or "v" is pronounced like "b" (/b/) in Spanish, so vivo and bebo are pronounced "bibo" and "bebo".

In Spanish, the letter "c" is pronunced like "s" in America and th in Spain when it precedes "e" or "i".The letter "c" sounds like "ch" when is before e in Italian, not Spanish.

Saludos

Hi Crom,

Thank you for your reply, and excuse me for my stupidity, but if 'c' is pronounced as 'th' before an 'e' or 'i' and a 'v' sounds like a 'b' shouldn't cerveza be pronounced ther-beza and not ser-veza sorry if this sounds stupid, but I'm having trouble as books say one thing but Spanish people seem to say another.

Thank you,

Django

Don't worry about your questions.

cerveza can have two pronounciations:

like therbétha (in most Spain); or

like serbésa (esp. in America).

The letter "z" is pronounced like "th" in all contexts, but "c" is "th" only before "e" and "i".

Good luck!
